Many adults give up on the idea of traveling when they live with chronic pain. They think those days are behind them, and they settle for dreaming. We have some good news. If this sounds like you, keep reading and discover how to manage chronic pain when traveling.
Check with your doctor and/or physical therapist before taking any trips. Let them know where you are going, how you are going, and for how long. They may be able to give you some extra tips about pain management. Depending on how long you will be gone, you may need extra medication or support devices. Pay attention to all their recommendations for a safe trip.
Making your way through a busy airport, security, and sitting in a cramped seat can be a pain. Don’t get discouraged! Think of where you are going, what loved ones you will connect with, and the freedom and enjoyment you will get from a change of environment.
Here are some non-negotiables when flying with chronic pain:
Most of the above tips hold here. Traveling by train can be a bit more comfortable and relaxing compared to flying. You can purchase a private room with beds and a restroom to give you not only more privacy, but also more comfort.
If you are not going too far away, an automobile trip can be relaxing.
Take breaks every hour or so. Change drivers if possible.
Walk around when you stop, stay hydrated, and stay safe by only using official rest stops.
If you have the will, you will find a way. Traveling will take a little planning, but it will be worth it.
