As the weather continues to warm, we all look forward to our favorite activities during summer like swimming, hiking, biking, and maybe even playing a little golf. Take some time now to plan ahead about managing your chronic pain during the summer.
If you have it all the time, or most of the time, it’s known as chronic pain.
Chronic pain in the lower back pain, or in the neck can occur instantly if you move your body the wrong way. You know, that nagging pain that is always just a movement away like putting on your socks or lifting something incorrectly? Age and our weight can cause chronic pain to become worse, and who wants to move when we hurt?
The truth is, moving, stretching, and exercise helps relieve chronic pain by releasing endorphins which are our body’s own painkillers. So how do you prepare for and manage your chronic pain during summer.
A pool or a nearby lake or beach can be helpful to anyone with chronic spinal pain. It is easy to do stretches in a pool, water aerobics are a respite from the discomfort, and just relaxing creates some relief.
Move and stretch standing in the pool while sipping a cold beverage. Get out that spray bottle or mister to keep you cool during the hot summer months. Ice packs will be your friend.
Chronic pain in your back makes you more susceptible to poor seating. Beware of those uncomfortable folding chairs, stools, and flimsy seating options that pretend to be chairs at a bistro. Bleachers at a baseball game can be abysmal. They will likely cause a flare up the minute you sit on them. Instead, keep a comfortable and sturdy chair in your car for such occasions and maybe some comfy cushions.
Avoid the hot blazing sun and stay in the shade to help with managing your chronic pain during the summer. If you plan to spend time outside in the sun, do it in the early morning when it’s not quite so hot or at sundown.
Wear loose clothing especially around the waist to reduce sciatica pain.
Staying hydrated means drinking lots of water, not alcoholic beverages which can dehydrate anyone. Seniors are more sensitive to this and will not notice this is happening.
Colorful fruits and veggies are plentiful in the summer and loaded with vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties. Fresh bing cherries along with tomatoes, leafy green veggies, strawberries, blueberries, and oranges are best.
